How big is the average couple height difference?

Worldwide, adult men average about 171 cm (5′7″) and women about 159 cm (5′2.5″), so the typical gap is roughly 12–13 cm, or about 5 inches. In most countries men are around 7–8% taller than women. In the Netherlands, the tallest nation, the gap is about 13 cm (183.8 cm vs 170.4 cm).

Real couples follow the same pattern. A large UK study of couples (Stulp et al., 2013) found the man was taller in about 92.5% of pairs, with an average gap close to the population average. Couples where the woman is taller are a small minority, so a tall girl with a shorter guy is less common, not unusual.

Couple height FAQ

What is the average height difference between couples?

About 13 cm (5 in). Globally men average roughly 171 cm and women 159 cm, and studies of real couples find the man is taller in more than 9 out of 10 pairs, usually by around 7–8%.

Is there an ideal height difference for a couple?

No single gap is ideal. Most real couples fall somewhere between about 5 and 20 cm (2–8 in), and equal heights or a taller woman are common enough to be unremarkable. Comfort, posture and footwear matter more than the number.

Can you kiss comfortably with a 20 cm height difference?

Yes. Up to about 20 cm (8 in), a slight upward tilt from the shorter partner and a small lean from the taller one are enough. Beyond that, tiptoes, a step or heels close the gap: 8–10 cm heels turn a 25 cm gap into 15–17 cm.

How do I calculate the height difference between me and my partner?

Subtract the shorter height from the taller one. A woman of 1.65 m and a man of 1.72 m differ by 7 cm (about 2.8 in), and 7 ÷ 165 gives a 4.2% difference. The calculator above does this in cm or ft/in and adds heels and eye level.
